ABSTRACT
The objective of this study is to analyze the aspects that allowed a critical
part of Social Economy Organizations (SEOs) to survive a recession period,
especially participation in collaborative networks. The financial stress of an SEO
will depend on the resources and capabilities available to the organization. To
analyze the financial stress of Spanish SEOs, we defined a sample of 714 SEOs.
Approximately half of these organizations suffered from financial stress in the
analyzed period (2009–2012). The results obtained in this study reveal the existence
of three factors that distinguish organizations under financial stress: (a) a high
dependence on government funding; (b) changes in the relationship between staff
and volunteers; and (c) a lack of access to markets. The combination of these three
elements results in an unsustainable situation for the organization. The development
of a collaborative profile increases the SEO’s probability of surviving the adverse
manifestations of its environment.

ABSTRACT
The concept of corporate reputation is steadily
growing in interest among management researchers and
practitioners. In this article, we trace key milestones in the
development of reputation literature over the past six
decades to suggest important research gaps as well as to
provide contextual background for a subsequent integration
of approaches and future outlook. In particular, we explore
the need for better categorised outcomes; a wider range of
causes; and a deeper understanding of contingencies and
moderators to advance the field beyond its current state
while also taking account of developments in the macro
business environment. The article concludes by presenting
a novel reputation framework that integrates insights from
reputation theory and studies, outlines gaps in knowledge
and offers directions for future research.

ABSTRACT
Traditional scholarship on political engagement has emphasised political parties, interest groups
and social movements as ways to influence public policy. This paper highlights the particular role
of advocacy coalitions as another conduit for political engagement. Drawing from scholarship
associated with the Advocacy Coalition Framework, we offer a way to think about political contexts
through coalitions, policy subsystems and political systems, and the attributes of politically engaged
actors. It is one of the first attempts to draw practical lessons about the theory of coalitions and,
thus, to facilitate better governance and politics as well as the advancement of scholarship.

Strategic Responses to Resource Management Pressures in Agriculture: Institutional, Gender and Location Effects

ABSTRACT
Sustainable management of natural resources
by farmers is under increasing public scrutiny. In Australia,
the case of water unsustainably used and stored by agricultural
businesses has gained attention with communities
in catchments potentially deprived of water and placed at
downstream risk. Yet, sustainable water management
institutional policy mechanisms remain disjointed around
the country. The study reported here applies a strategic
response typology to a survey of 404 farmers in four different
institutional environments in Australia to explore
their responses to institutional pressures. Findings demonstrate
a convergence in typologies that relate to farmers
organising each other and communities influencing and
networking for the benefit of agricultural resource management
thereby questioning the traditional continuum of
resistance. Furthermore, the mid-range typology ‘avoidance’
emerges as a highly problematic typology for sustainable
water management policymakers especially those
in weaker institutional environments where there is a need
to develop policy instruments that retain farmer water
management decision-making power and encourage networks.
The paper also extends the strategic response
typology to enable understanding of how gender and
location affect strategic responses to institutional pressures.
Findings provide insight for policy design in times of
increasing catastrophic flood and drought conditions
exacerbated by poor water management practice.
